As summer in the Roaring Fork Valley fades into fall, the rivers, trails, and golden light remind us why this season is so unforgettable. Our agents share their favorite ways to savor the last days of summer while embracing the beauty of what’s ahead.
These Boots Were Made for Wednesdays

Chantal Henderson

From June to August, the Snowmass Rodeo takes center stage on Wednesday nights, with the Carbondale Wild West Rodeo carrying the excitement into Thursday evenings just down the valley. The Snowmass Rodeo is one of Chantal Henderson’s and Mark Lewis’ favorite pastimes every summer. “The Snowmass Rodeo is one of the most popular family events of the summer,” Chantal, who helps run the front of house with Mark, says, “we love being there every Wednesday night and seeing how excited everyone is to watch the rodeo and eat some BBQ!” Together, these events highlight the valley’s vibrant summer tradition of community, family fun, and western heritage.
Casting Lines Beneath the Peaks

In the Roaring Fork Valley, summer finds its soul on the river. It’s where crisp mountain air meets the steady rhythm of flowing water, and where every cast, every float, becomes its own story. For Dayna Horton, the beauty lies in the ease of slipping away right from downtown Aspen. “This photo was taken right in downtown Aspen with Ajax in the background, somewhere sneaky in the Roaring Fork river by the post office. When the leaves start to change, so too do the colors of the fish in our backyard, especially the brown trout and brook trout. This is my go-to spot because I can walk right from downtown during lunch or a quiet evening and pick from a million different spots to wade in the river. Even without a single bite, the colors, the sounds of the birds and the river, all combine for a perfect couple of hours.” That same magic takes on a more celebratory spirit for Scott Bayens, who calls the river the ultimate gathering place. “Floating the Roaring Fork river; rippin’ some lips! The best way to celebrate success and friendship! But gotta come with me to know where they hide!” And for Chris Lewis, the river is pure escape, unhurried and restorative. “Always enjoying an stress-free aquatic adventure while floating one of our local rivers, sometimes it’s successful!” Together, their stories remind us why the river is the centerpiece of summer here: a place where adventure, connection, and tranquility flow effortlessly together.
Chasing Views: Hiking the Roaring Fork’s Finest

Summer in the mountains is best measured in elevation, with every trail leading to new heights and unforgettable views. For Michael Perau and his wife, that tradition is their “annual bike and hike to the sky,” a climb to Huntsman Ridge at 11,000 feet. “It’s our day to escape and take in top-of-the-world views,” he says. Scott Lasser and Lane Schiller are drawn to the pristine alpine waters just outside of town. “In the words of Scott and Lane, “the ‘Lake’ trails, Cathedral and American, can’t be beat for scenery and the reward when you arrive at your destination. Both trailheads are close to town, and both lakes are stunningly beautiful. For Duncan Clauss, who pairs endurance with exhilaration, his favorite summer activity is trail running to the lakes and diving into the high mountain waters. For others, such as Ashley Feddersen, the draw is quieter but just as powerful. “Hiking is my meditation. No headphones, no music, no talking on the phone, just me and the sounds of nature.” Together, these stories show why hiking and high-alpine adventure define summer in the mountains: freedom, awe-inspiring views, and the peace of being fully present outdoors.
Endurance in Elevation

One of the mountains’ greatest luxuries is trading the everyday run for a high-alpine challenge few places on earth can match. For James Stewart, that challenge is the Power of Four 50K, a grueling race across all four Aspen Snowmass ski mountains. “It’s my favorite way to test myself each summer, a perfect expression of Aspen grit and the tenacity with which we chase life in the Elk Range.” That same spirit of endurance fuels Jay Wright, who finds his stride on one of the valley’s most iconic routes. “One of my favorite summer activities is running the Four Pass Loop with friends. Located in the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness, the Four Pass Loop is a 28-mile excursion over four high mountain passes with some of the most beautiful and stunning scenery around. The route includes dramatic mountain views, high alpine meadows, lakes, wildflowers, and plenty of wildlife viewing.” Whether it’s the test of a race or the rhythm of a long backcountry loop, running here is more than exercise, it’s a way of living the landscape.
Farm Fresh Mornings & Festive Afternoons

Saturdays in Aspen brim with tradition and community. For Sally Shiekman, the Aspen Farmers Market, held every Saturday from 8:30 am to 2 pm, June through October, is her “Saturday morning happy place.” Stalls of organic peaches, crisp vegetables, and artisan goods transform a grocery run into a social ritual under Aspen’s bluebird skies. That same small-town spirit shines on the Roaring Fork River during the annual Aspen Rotary Ducky Derby, which took place Saturday, August 2, 2025. As Bennett Bramson shares, it’s “the essence of the fun, camaraderie, excitement, and joy… and proud to be a part of the Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s team, which is a major sponsor.” Together, these Saturday traditions capture the heart of Aspen in summer, fresh, festive, and unforgettable.
Teeing Off in the Roaring Fork Valley

There are over a dozen golf courses, both public and private, within the Roaring Fork Valley. At one of them, Ironbridge Golf Club, two of our brokers recently played in the annual Member Guest tournament, a favorite event that brings members and their guests together. As Sean de Moraes and Shawn Manwaring explain, it’s “an amazing opportunity for us to extend our reach, share with members and their guests on the local real estate market, what’s happening around Ironbridge Golf Club and even in their own neighborhoods throughout the valley.” For AJ Morris, summer means spending time on the course at River Valley Ranch. As he puts it, “River Valley Ranch – play over and along the Roaring Fork River, stunning views of Mt. Sopris, one of the best courses in the valley.”
Up Where the Colors Fly

You know summer is winding down when the Snowmass Balloon Festival fills the sky with color. For three days each September, hot air balloons lift off against the backdrop of the Elk Mountains, painting the valley in brilliant reds, yellows, and blues. Whether you’re watching from the launch field, catching the glow at dusk, or spotting balloons drifting above the peaks, the festival is a beloved marker of the season’s change and one of the most iconic traditions in Snowmass.
There’s nothing quite like summer in the Roaring Fork Valley, long days, cool mountain nights, and endless ways to enjoy the outdoors. Whether it’s hiking under wildflower-covered peaks, savoring local flavors at an open-air market, or teeing off on mountain fairways, this season brings the valley to life. As the days grow shorter and the first hints of fall color the landscape, we celebrate the moments that make summer unforgettable while looking ahead to the beauty of a new season.
